Things had not gone well that week, if could have gone wrong, it did, so by the time we were supposed to leave for New York you were in a foul mood. However, we needed this week away, I had been unwell and although we made love often, it had become very ‘samey’ and I hoped this break would give us a new lease of life.

The flight left at noon, it was not far to the airport so we had a leisurely breakfast, you with your peanut butter on toast, and me with a couple of scrambled eggs. A quick shower together, managing to resist the temptation to have a bit of fun, we threw a few things into a bag, grabbed the laptop, our phones and coats from the rack by the door, and headed for the cab waiting outside. On the trip to the airport, I glanced at you dozing, head lolling to one side, and wondered if I could make the plane journey, well, interesting.

New Years Resolution

Sex was not the first thing on her mind. It never was and she swore it would never be, because with sex came one of two things, guilt or love. The guilt was when you woke up in the morning next to a face you couldn’t put a name to, or when you indulged with the drop dead gorgeous man, who had a wife and two kids waiting patiently at home. Love, now that was something else. She had been in love many times, and had given her heart and body to all of them. Each man as precious as the next, she truly loved them all, at the time, but as is the way of the world, they came into her life, and then took a part of her soul with them when they left.

She entered the New Years Eve party with these thoughts and a New Years resolution, celibacy was the way to go, no more men! Apart from the fact she had hit the big 5-0, and was bored with the whole relationship thing, Katy decided that from now on she would leave it to the youngsters. She would last out her days on her own with Rampant Rabbit to keep her company. It never argued back, did not care if she put on a few pounds, was always ready and waiting anytime of the day or night and never broke her heart.

Alison sighed as she tore herself away from the laptop. Taking her glasses off and rubbing her weary eyes, she realised that the story had taken her way into the night. The old wooden chair creaked as she rose to her feet and the sounds bounced around the cavernous room, in which the only other audible noise was the popping of the logs in the fireplace. Stretching her aching bones, she wrapped the blanket around her shoulders and padded into the chilly kitchen. Standing at the window as she filled the kettle and watching the snowflakes drifting on the breeze, suddenly she shivered involuntarily as someone walked over her grave, how she hated the winter.

The lamplight shines through the window casting an orange glow on the room. Sitting on the sofa with a cup of tea in one hand and the remote in the other, flicking through the dreary Sunday television, Rosie has a sinking feeling in her stomach. The woods remain empty, and she knows in her heart of hearts that it the futile search for her love must end.

How it got to this, she does not know. Not so long ago her spirit soared with love through the forest of life, but now her nymph is no longer by her side, she falters and is unsure of her next steps, should she wait for eternity? Switching off the television, she lies back on the cushions and as she casts her mind back to those halcyon days a teardrop forms at the corner of her eye, spills over, rolls down her cheek and drips onto the long blond hair that frames her sorrowful face.
