Convinced that life could not get any worse, I took another swig from the bottle of JD and staggered over to the sofa. Launching my body onto the large squidgy cushions, I fought to keep the tears from welling, but as his face swam before my eyes, I erupted into another bout of misery and sobbed myself into a coma.

Over my third cup of coffee the following morning, Jenny, my best friend and confidante, murmured all the soothing words she felt I should hear, as still wallowing in despair, I bemoaned the fact that I was now on my own, again.

That’s Life

Feet up on the sofa, snuggled under my blanket with a cup of tea and yet another chocolate biscuit, I ponder my life. I have everything I could ever want, a man that loves me, well several actually if I am truthful with myself. I have a beautiful house, a lovely family, and enough money. Turning the television off and munching on another biscuit from the bag, which has a seemingly endless supply of rather scrummy fattening chocolate fingers: I drift away.

It all started a few years ago. I cannot pinpoint how, or for that matter why, the series of events turned my world upside down, but one thing is for sure they did. Ginny did no more than decide to take a walk; it was as simple as that.

The sun shining through the window that morning made her decide that it was too beautiful a day to be staying indoors banging away at the typewriter. Therefore, she scooted from the bed, showered, dressed in a summer frock, had a cup of coffee and headed out the door. It could not have been a more perfect morning, the perfumed, still air smelled of gardenias as she closed the front door and picking a lily on the way along the path, she was full of the joys of summer.

She almost skipped along the short walk down the leafy lane in dappled sunlight to the gently flowing river. The bees buzzed as they foraged for their morning nectar, birds sang in the trees and by the time she reached the water, the sun was high in the sky. The heat warmed her heart as much as her skin and all was right with the world. Well it made a change, after the last two horrendous weeks, life had to improve at some point.

The Morning After the Night Before

There was no relief from the relenting heat. She had travelled for days, stopping only for short periods of time to refill the canteen, water the horse, and sleeping only when she could no longer keep awake enough to stay on her mount. She had left the dessert behind yesterday and was now winding her way between the aspen and pine trees that clung to the mountainside on the way to the pass. She knew they were about a days ride away, but felt sure that once she made her way across the ridge and down into Montana, they would give up their chase.

If only he had not kissed her, none of this would have happened. She already knew she was about to make a mistake when she slipped the dress on that morning. Not her usual garb and certainly not something she would wear often, she gazed at herself in the mirror appreciatively. Just tipping into the flirty forties, her slim small-breasted body carried the garment well. Good padding in her bra pushed what little she had towards the heavens, and although often wishing she had been better endowed, was at least grateful her boobs would not go south as the summer of her years headed towards autumn.
