Serendipity

©Keith David 2010 ©Virginia Alison 2010

A spiritual adventure to find her true love takes an Indian Princess from her home and family. One of the first joint stories by Virginia and Keith.

V….sitting cross-legged facing the east, the maiden awaits the sunrise. She watches the buffalo grazing on the plains of her ancestors, a land once ravaged by war; now tranquil as each day dawns. The time is nigh, she must choose twixt life and love. Her heart torn asunder, her future foretold from birth, chosen for her by the elders; but the Sun Dancer, sought by another no longer takes fate as truth and she...

K…reflects with a heavy heart on her choice. The beauty and peace of her homeland unfolds as the sun begins it climb. She struggles to imprint this scene in her mind, knowing her path will take her far away from this place, never to return. Taking a deep breath, she steels herself for the task ahead. The journey to her destiny begins with a single step, the wind gently pushing her onward as the sun bathes her in warm golden hues. Unfolding before her eyes, the earth changes slowly as…

V...she turns her back on the rising sun and makes for the westfold. Spring has arrived, melting snow glistening on the trees forms droplets that fall onto her silken black hair from above. She feels the winds blowing gently from the south bringing with them the promise of a summer filled with hot cloudless skies as the sun climbs and warm loving nights on moon rise. She leaves behind the safety of all she has known, she leaves her childhood and the one whose children she would bear if she stayed; but must follow her heart. He waits for her but time is short, and she has far to travel before the new moon rises. Around her neck hangs one-half of a gem, it gleams in the light and she feels its black heart beating against her breast calling for...

K…her return. Taking the gem in her hand and with a final glance back to the plains of her people, she weeps and a single tear falls to the earth. Passing through the familiar grounds where she played as a child, out beyond the abundant hunting lands of her father’s father and into the foothills of the great mountains to the west, her journey slowly unfolds before her. Walking brings new sights and peace as she closes the distance to her true love, but she must rest and the quiet brings trouble to her mind. Thoughts of her life, and what she left behind, fill her with sorrow as she drifts off to sleep under the shimmering bright stars. Her ancestors come to her in dreams, beckoning her home to be with her people and fulfil her destiny, yet a single voice calls to her and steadies her. She hears it clearly saying…

V....'your paths of your life are of your choosing, choose the way of your heart and your dreams will be fulfilled'. As the voice fades away the dream changes, she sits astride a black stallion, racing across the plains, the rising moon glows on her face and the wind blows through her hair. She urges him on, flying on the breeze, the ground undulating below under an ethereal blue mist. Stopping suddenly as a black forest looms ahead, a shudder convulses through her form, an ominous feeling overcomes her as she watches the mist twisting in through the trees moving towards an eerie glow that emanates from deep within. Her mind whirls with fear, and with a trembling heart, she pushes her mount towards...

K…the enigma, but bucking and snorting in protest it refuses another step forward. The light radiates and pulses in the mist. Growing larger and stronger, and with deep rumbling echoes of noise, it begins to take a human form. Gliding towards her through the mist, pace quickening as it goes, the shape becomes more defined as it rushes towards her. Momentarily paralyzing her with fear, the figure becomes focused and clear for an instant and she recognizes the face. Calling her name in a loud rumbling tone, it passes through her body with a shiver and disappears. Fear has vanished and her stead settled as the forest falls silent around her. She wakes with a shutter to find…

V...herself enveloped in the mist, the ground beneath her cold and unyielding. Her thoughts jumbled her mind foggy and unable to focus. Her skin cold and dewy and as she touches her face her fingers emit a blue spark, crackling in the silence and she takes fright. Observing her hands now as they waver before her eyes, she feels the aura of another, a deep blue-black malevolence resonating within her. She feels the mist pulling at her soul and as she rises, blue gossamer threads twist and wind their way up her body until shrouded in a shimmering haze. She opens her mouth and an unearthly shriek resounds through the forest as the incorporeal wraith calls for its own. The stallion rears as she approaches and...

K…she hears the demon call echo again. The earth rumbles and she shakes her head trying to clear the fog, to make sense of what is happening. In an instant, she remembers the gem half around her neck. Grabbing for it in her left hand, it burns and vibrates wildly against her skin. Fuelled by confusion and fear, thoughts race through her mind. Is it protecting her from this banshee or calling him to her? She needs time to think, but the vapour has overtaken her. The burning pain of its touch on her skin as it tries to enter through every pore and opening on her body is too much. Blindly running and flailing her arms in a vain attempt to remove the pain, she says a silent prayer for her soul, begging her ancestors for help. Into her mind, she hears…

V...a soft whisper come 'the truth awaits those whose task is to restore the stone'. She halts her frenzy, the gem in her hand beats in time with her own and as she gazes deep into the shard the life force pulls at her, wrenching at her soul. A calm seeps over her as the tide ebbs and the misty tendrils relinquish their hold as they subside, slithering back until they lap around her feet. As she moves forward the mists part, a path appears before her, the vapour twists and weaves as if to urge her forth towards the incorporeal nucleus of the forest. As she enters the wood a dank odour permeates her nostrils, the trees, dark and ominous reach out to her, welts appear on her body as their branches caress her skin, absorbing her essence and the mists close in behind leaving no trail of her impending.....

K…tribulation. Deep within the forest, a tiny glimmer illuminates the mist, calling to her spirit. Without knowledge of how or why, she glides gently above the vapour. She is pulled, by an enigmatic force, towards the light. The foul smell invades her body and becomes sticky on her skin as the fog slowly becomes an undulating gelatinous soup beneath her. Approaching the light it comes into focus, taking shape before her and again she hears the unearthly shriek from her dream. Grasping the gem on her chest brings peace to her soul and without fear, she continues onward, knowing this must be done. Coming to a clearing the light hovers above the slime which glows and waves beneath them. The crystal burns and pulses in her hand in unison with the radiance. Her thoughts are a whirl as the figure before her…

V...emerges and the light fades behind. Cloaked in black and gliding through the fog her heart seizes and she struggles for breath as she sees for the first time dangling around the neck is a light, throbbing in time with the gem clasped to her chest. As realisation filters through to her mind, she slowly releases her grip and her hand drops to her side. The shining lights from deep inside the black jewels radiate outwards gathering strength until they meet and become a celestial glow. Transfixed as the scene unfolds before her the jewel draws her towards the spectral figure until she is within a breath of it and slowly the gems reach out to each other, rising with an unearthly wail and as they unite the cloaked figure throws its head back and emits an unearthly scream. The apparition starts wavering and slowly dissolves until nothing remains save a frenzy of fireflies, which dart off into the night.

The gem drops to the ground, bending to retrieve it; she sees the two halves have fused into a black heart. On grasping the stone, she feels love from two hearts beating as one. Tears flow freely as she opens her eyes to the dying night and the promise of a new day, unsure of the message shown to her, she...

K…looks back to the east as the sky just begins its glow with the rising sun. It is her land, the land of her people. Then she turns and looks to the west, still dark with night and the memory of the voice from her dream comes back to her, 'your paths of your life are of your choosing, choose the way of your heart and your dreams will be fulfilled'.

K…Her mind wanders to the stranger she met three moons ago in the forest while gathering wood. He startled her, appearing from nowhere on his pale white horse. Clothed in dark red deerskin and a long silver necklace adorned with turquoise beads. His whole aura seemed to shimmer in the early morning light. His gentle red face was beautiful and brought peace to her soul as if she had always known him. He spoke to her, but without making a sound. For a long time they simply stared into the others eyes and she listening in her mind. She felt complete peace and unconditional love. He handed her the half gemstone from around his neck and as she held it in her hand for the first time and without knowing how or why, she knew her destiny had changed.

K…Watching him bound away and disappear into the trees without a sound, the gem began joining their energies and pulling her to him. She began to think of going to him, but the thought slowly became desire and desire became need as the gem pulled her. Unable to resist, she embarked on her journey, leaving her home and family, expecting him to be holding the other half of the jewel. Yet now she was alone, feeling love like never before with the black heart in her hand, but unsure of which way to turn.

K…Holding the stone near her face she stares at it, searching for clues she begins to ask questions in her mind. The fused seam where the halves joined slowly disappears as the crystal becomes translucent and an image begins to form inside of it…

V…..In the shadow of the red mountain, which lay at the edge of the Westfold a river, winds its way through the pines. The clear sparkling water glistens as it weaves its way to the ocean, taking age-old memories within the flow. On the banks, a white horse grazes next to a tepee, the top blackened from eons of spiralling smoke. To the side skins hang, drying in the sun and gentle breeze. She feels comforted within; this sight is somehow familiar, yet unknown.

V…The light within the crystal shifts, moves almost indiscernibly but as it does, the scene changes, the land turns white as snow falls around. A fire burns brightly at the entrance and cries echo from within the wikiup, cries of pain and fear. She squints her eyes to see more but again the crystals light changes, the river runs red, the skins covering the tepee, torn and smouldering, animals flee through the scene which her mind no longer comprehends,

V…She is jolted back to reality as her body shivers. This is her destiny. However, what fate awaits her? Unanswered questions run through her mind but this love she feel draws her and as she turns her attention back to the path the black stallion comes to her side, she takes the reins and walks towards the dark choice that looms in the distance-serendipity awaits…..
